Hello. I just wanted to inquire for more information regarding marriage and whether it can be celebrated outside of the church. I have been apart of a couple different catholic churches in both Stevensville and in Missoula. We are getting married in August, but it will be an outdoor ceremony. If at all possible however, it is important to me that our wedding is performed by a priest. Are there any exceptions to availability to be have a ceremony in an outdoor location? Is there any possibility of having a ceremony in the Church, and then also having an outdoor ceremony? Any information you could provide me with would be appreciated, thank you!

Thank you for your inquiry. Yes special permission can be obtained from the office of the bishop for a Catholic wedding outside a church building. There are particular requirements. It will be necessary for you to contact the pastor of your parish, in the area in which you live, or the parish of the bride, if she is Catholic. Regular notification of wedding plans (at least six months prior to expected wedding); parish provided Marriage preparation is required. So I advise you to be in touch with your local parish priest, depending on where you are now living. If I can be of further assistance please to not hesitate to contact me at Blessed Trinity. Congratulations on your planned marriage. Fr. Ed Hislop 406-721-2405
